Welcome back to Ponte Vedra

Ponte Vedra Girls Softball is pleased to welcome back our Florida Babe Ruth softball All-Star teams for our annual State Championships.  Last year, 59 teams, in five age-divisions, played a total of 109 games, over the course of six days.  This year, we are expecting 70 or more teams, which will play 130+ games in five days.

We are hoping for perfect weather the entire week.  However, since we are in Florida during the summer, don't be surprised if our schedule of games and events hits a speed-bump or two.  Please use this Web site to keep on top of the latest news and bracket updates.  If we experience weather delays, this Web page is where you'll go to find up-to-the-minute news.

If you have questions, please use the Contacts page to find the person who can best assist you.

If you have questions, comments, or ideas, please don't hesitate to send an e-mail to Marc Bugbey, the 2010 Tournament Director: marc.bugbey@comcast.net

Ponte Vedra and Ponte Vedra Beach

The 2010 Florida State Championships will be held at Davis Park, which is located off the eastern end of the Nocatee Parkway in Ponte Vedra (32081), just west of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW).  Some 14U and/or 16U games may be played at Ponte Vedra High School, which is adjacent to Davis Park.  All other games will be played at the Softball and Baseball complexes at Davis Park.

East of the ICW is the coastal community of Ponte Vedra Beach (32082).  The Sawgrass Marriott Resort, which is the host hotel, is located in Ponte Vedra Beach, about seven (7) miles north of Davis Park.  The Marriott is adjacent to the world famous Tournament Players Club of Sawgrass, sight of THE PLAYERS Championship.  Sawgrass Marriott Resort guests will have access to the TPC Stadium and Valley courses along with the Cabana Beach Club.

Click here to see the Venues page.  From there you can use the maps.google.com links for directions to the Sawgrass Marriott Resort and Davis Park.  All venues are located in northeast St. Johns County.

Official Photography

Glossy Finish is once again providing photographic services during the tournament.  Their professional sports photographers will only photograph players whose parents have first sign-up.  You can do this now.  There is a complete set of instructions on the Team page.

8U Rules and Louisville Slugger Pitching Machine

The 2010 Florida State Championships is the second stage of the Babe Ruth Softball Tournament Trail.  All rules for such tournaments can be found in the 2010 Babe Ruth Softball Rules and Regulations

However, there are a few rules for the 8U division that are clarified by the Southeast Regional Commissioner.

  • Southeast Regional Rookie (8U) Rules - Click here to get the Commissioner's two-page rules document.  This same document will be part of the handouts delivered during the Manager's Meeting.  This document was last updated and reviewed by Henry P. Sermons, the SE Regional Commissioner, on Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010.  If you are an 8U coach, please take the time to review this document.

  • Louisville Slugger Ultimate Pitching Machine (UPM 40) - The Regional Commissioner has again mandated the use of this machine during the 2010 Regional Championships.  The State Commissioner embraced this RULE as did all associations in District #1.  So, we'll use the machine again this year.

  • There is no overthrow rule in 8U tournament play - The ball remains live on any overthrow.  This was clarified by the Bill Selman, the Florida State UIC.

  • Each team will use 10 fielders and an optional EH.

  • There is no run limit per inning rule - Even though the 2010 Babe Ruth Softball Rulebook indicates that "There will be a five (5) runs per inning limit with an open 6th inning" (11.07-8U - b. pg.56), the Southeast Region does not use this rule.  So, 8U teams will score as many runs as the can in each inning.

  • An optional Courtesy Runner can be used for the Catcher only. - (2.00 Definition of Terms, COURTESY RUNNER, pg.13).

Monday (7/12) games - Last year, Friday games were suspended at 1:30 PM due to rain.  All remaining Friday games were pushed into Saturday with the last games of the day starting after midnight... we played 41 games that day on six fields.  Remember, Babe Ruth Softball rules stipulate that no team can play more than three (3) tournament games a day.  The 12U division's IF game had to be played on Monday.

So, if we get a weather postponement, there may be the possibility of some teams having to finish on Monday.
